Are multi fuel stoves energy efficient?

Yes, newer models of multifuel stoves are now energy efficient.

All of the multifuel burning stoves on the market today have to meet the new Ecodesign regulations. This means they have been independently checked and verified.

They will also come with an Ecodesign label that gives an Eco energy rating to tell you have efficient they are.

The Ecolabel gives an energy rating for each stove. It’s a bit like the energy rating you get for your homes to say how energy efficient it is.

All of the multifuel stoves above are rated either as an A or A+, highlighting the great efficiency and heat effectiveness. The efficiency percentage tells you how much of the fuel is converted into heat, which is now at a minimum of 75%. Any stove with an efficiency over 80% is great.

Recap on Ecodesign ready regulations

Ecodesign ready stoves are now the law. The new regulations form part of the UK government’s Clean Air Strategy 2019, which has come off the back of an EU Directive on air pollution.

In short, the new Ecodesign regulations are coming in to lessen the impact of stoves on the environment. Specifically, Ecodesign relates to particulate emissions and the air pollution this causes. Less smoke particles emitted, less air pollution.

Ecodesign ready stoves emit significantly less emissions, even when compared to the previous best DEFRA-approved category. All Ecodesign stoves have to reduce particulate emissions by 55% and carbon monoxide levels by 88% compared to Defra-approved stoves.

You can read more about the details behind what Ecodesign ready means here.

What can you burn on a multifuel stove?

When it comes to buying a stove, you have two choices: Pure wood burner and a multi fuel stove.

According to Which? magazine, of those who own a stove in the UK, 46% are wood burners and 54% are multifuel burners.

As multi fuel stoves often make use of natural fuel sources, they’re sometimes called mineral fuel stoves too.

The clue is in the name – a multi fuel stove can burn a variety of fuel sources, including wood and traditional logs, as well as other smokeless materials. They can do this thanks to a moveable grate at the bottom, so the stove can be de-ashed to maintain burn effectiveness.

With a multifuel stove you have a greater choice of what you use to produce heat.

A multi fuel stove can burn:

  • Wood – logs, pellets, firewood, kindling
  • Sawdust briquettes
  • Turf briquettes
  • Coffee logs – which use spent coffee grounds
  • Smokeless fuel – including smokeless coal, although not recommended from an environmental perspective.
  • Peat briquettes – again not very environmentally friendly as peat needs to be kept in the ground.

Logs that have been made from recycled waste materials such as sawdust, wood off-cuts and shavings are collectively known as eco logs or heat logs. You can even get multifuel logs made from spent coffee grounds now, not surprisingly called coffee logs.
