Recap on Ecodesign ready regulations
From the 1st January 2022, all wood (and solid fuel) burning stoves sold have to meet strict Ecodesign requirements. You can read all about what Ecodesign is here.
To provide a quick summary, Ecodesign ready means that all wood burners manufactured and sold from 2022 will have a much smaller impact on emission levels and the environment.
In particular, air pollution emitted from Ecodesign stoves in the form of smoke particulates will be greatly reduced compared to previous log burners.
Most energy efficient wood burning stoves
The new Ecodesign stoves also come with an Ecolabel energy rating.
All of the eco log burners listed below are A or A+ on the energy rating scale. This is thanks to the greater efficiency of Ecodesign stoves in converting the wood fuel into heat energy, rather than energy going up in smoke up the flue.
The minimum efficiency of eco stoves is now at 75% compared to 60% previously.
So at least 75% of your wood fuel will be converted into heat energy. This means you’re wood will provide more heat over a longer period, which will also save you money in fuel costs.
Eco log burners better for the environment
You may have heard about DEFRA-approved wood burners, which were the most eco-friendly stoves on the market.
Well, emissions from Ecodesign stoves will be at least 55% reduced compared to Defra-approved stoves, and carbon monoxide levels must be reduced by 88%. You can have a gander here to see the best DEFRA-approved small log burners on the market.
Research from the Stove Industry Alliance show that Ecodesign ready stoves will reduce particulate emissions by around 80% compared to stoves from 10 years ago. This means that Ecodesign stoves are the better choice for the environment.
The new regulations also apply to multifuel stoves. You can read more on the 15 best multifuel stoves here.
