One of the simplest, sustainable joys for me is using a reusable water bottle.
A good, well-made refillable water bottle lasts years and saves an awful lot of plastic being used. In a strange way, once you’ve been using your own water bottle or reusable coffee cup for a while, you become quite attached to them!
I’ve been the owner of a Global WAKEcup stainless steel water bottle for over three years now and it’s still going strong.
I already had a good water bottle that I was happy with, so I didn’t start using the WAKEcup stainless steel one straight away. Without wanting to see it sit there in the cupboard, I did eventually find a good use for it as my new gym water bottle!
Before we get into how I’ve found the WAKEcup water bottle, let’s cover who Global WAKEcup are.
About Global WAKEcup
If you don’t know much about Global WAKECup, they’re a UK-based zero waste company who produce reusable coffee cups, water bottles, lunchboxes and accessories.
Established only in 2018 by Nick and Buffie after being inspired by David Attenborough’s Blue Planet series, their mission is to end the single-use plastic pollution that is plaguing the world and it’s oceans. If you haven’t watched that series by the way, it is a must! And where have you been?!
As well as producing a fantastic range of water bottles and reusable mugs, Global WAKECup also donate 10% of all their profits to the Marine Conservation Society. That means every purchase from them goes to help fund the vital work that goes into protecting our seas, oceans, marine habitats and biodiversity that live here.
During the pandemic, WAKECup have also been donating hundreds of water bottles to NHS staff on the front line.
Although it’s still early days, to me Global WAKEcup sound like a brand with a heart that cares about the environment and the fabric of our societies.
Key features of the WAKEcup Stainless Steel 750ml Water Bottle
Key features include:
- BPA free
- Stainless steel (304 variety)
- Organic bamboo
- Keeps water ice cold for 4 hours
- Air-tight screw lid
- Dishwasher safe
There are a number of great features of this stainless steel water bottle.
The first one that strikes me is the simplicity of the design. As you can see from the image, the water bottle is incredibly sleek yet robust in appearance and the bamboo top to the lid adds an extra touch of quality and finish.
The vast majority of the bottle is made from high grade stainless steel, including the ergonomic carry handle. The screw-top lid is also made from stainless steel with a nice bamboo top finish, plus a rubber ring just under the cap so the bottle can form an air-tight and leak-proof seal.
The bottle just features one Global WAKEcup logo which is at the bottom of the bottle.
Benefits of the WAKEcup stainless steel water bottle
There are a number of things I really like about this WAKEcup water bottle.
Capacity
The first thing is its 750ml capacity. Most water bottles tend to have a 500ml capacity, so having an extra 50% of space on this is a real bonus.
This is particular yourself when you’re on a big walk or somewhere you know you won’t have means to fill the bottle back up. If you’re like me, I hate the thought of being without water!

Good Quality, No Nasties
This stainless steel bottle is naturally BPA free and is corrosion resistant. This means it will last you long time, won’t rust or deteriorate in quality in the way that plastic water bottles do or release any chemicals into your drink.
I use my stainless steel bottle with an activated charcoal stick for natural filtration. It works brilliantly.
Thanks to the easy to clean nature and nature anti-microbial characteristics of stainless steel, you also won’t get any mould growth that you sometimes get in plastic water bottles after a period of use. Have a read here on how to clean stainless steel water bottles.
The steel doesn’t taint the taste of the drink in any way – you’ll just be sipping on a clean, fresh, cool drink – and it will last a long time without deteriorating in quality.
The good thing about stainless steel is that it’s hygienic and easy to sterilise by hand or in the dishwasher.
Recycled Content
If you’re environmentally-minded, you can also take pleasure that around 80% of all new stainless steel products are made with recycled content and have a small carbon footprint.
When the bottle does come to the end of its use, it can be fully recycled. Read more on how sustainable stainless steel is here.
Leak Proof
The features from WAKEcup state that the bottle is leak-proof and in my experience it has never leaked even a drop of water once, and I’ve knocked it over numerous times with the lid not fully closed. Thumbs up from me on this.
I also really like the unpretentious, streamlined look to the bottle. It’s not pretending to be anything fancy, just a solid water bottle made from very few materials that does a great job.

Any negatives to the WAKEcup stainless steel bottle?
In truth, I have very few negatives to mention about this bottle.
The only thing I can mention is that the screw top lid can sometimes be a bit fiddly to line up and put back on. Unlike say the Chilly bottle lid that slots into a groove, the WAKEcup lid is more like your traditional screw top, except it screws on the inside of the neck.
It’s not an insulated water bottle so it won’t keep your drink cold for 24 hours and more, but it doesn’t claim to be a thermal bottle so this isn’t really a negative. Your drink inside will stay very cold for four hours which is enough for a long walk or gym session in my case. After all, you should be drinking more than 750ml of water in 4 hours anyway, so you’ve got a good excuse to get it refilled!
Just remember if you do fill it up with very cold water, the outside of the bottle will be cold to touch too as the stainless steel isn’t insulated. This is where the handle comes in handy.
Would I recommend a Global WAKEcup stainless steel water bottle?
Yes, absolutely I would.
It’s robust, looks great and does the job of keeping your drink cold.
I really like the no frills, stainless steel look appearance and the fact that the bottle will pick up a couple of little dints and scratches as it gets used. To me this shows a bit of love and character coming from good use of the water bottle.
I love stainless steel as a material and have a few eco friendly food containers made from this metal too.
Simple, sustainable and does exactly the job you want it to do. What more could you ask more?
