Who are Overherd?
Overherd was founded in 2023 by Sandy Eyre. Still in their very early stages, Overherd are a two person team headquartered up in stunning North Yorkshire. Despite being from the other side of the Pennines, I love that part of the country.
As innovators in the market, Overherd are the first company in the UK to launch an oat milk powder. And to be honest, it makes perfect sense.
Oat milk as you know it, is 90% water. This contributes to a lot of weight to transport, a lot of packaging and a lot of food waste when you don’t finish the carton.
With their powdered oat milk, Overherd are offering a much better and even more sustainable way to drink plant-based milk. Sandy likens it to blackcurrant squash. You don’t buy it already mixed with water at the shop, do you?
The same is true for other more sustainable products around the home, like eco laundry sheets.
Oat milk is also the most popular plant-based milk in the UK, overtaking almond milk in 2021. Oats also happen to be super-sustainable because they can be grown in the UK. Thankfully, Overherd’s oat milk powder is made in the UK too.
So, it seems oat milk is absolutely the right type of vegan friendly milk to start with for Overherd.

Benefits of Overherd Oat Milk Powder
The more I read into oat milk powder, the more benefits kept coming to light.
Overherd are a shining example of how to create a sustainable and useful product. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of oat milk powder.
- Versatile – You can use it in hot drinks, smoothies, protein shakes, cereal, porridge, baking and cooking.
- Convenient – You can put the oat milk powder straight into coffee as a creamer (my preferred method) or if you want to make liquid oat milk, just add water and give it a shake. So easy. It doesn’t take up space in your fridge, it’s just there on the side, ready to go.
- Vegan friendly – Plant-based milks have become popular as vegan friendly options. Oat milk powder is no different and is very much vegan friendly.
- Gluten free – Oats don’t contain gluten.
- Reduces carbon emissions – Standard oat milk is already much better for the environment that dairy milk in terms of carbon emissions. But oat milk powder is even better. The powdered version is around 10 times lighter than liquid oat milk. This very quickly adds up in terms of carbon emissions associated with transportation.

- Reduces packaging needs – One 800g pouch of oat milk powder produces 8 litres of oat milk. That’s a lot of saved packaging versus 8 litres worth of cartons! It also means that powders offer great value for money.
- Reduces food waste – Oat milk powder has a much longer shelf life than standard oat milk. Once opened, the pouch is good for at least 6 months as long as it’s resealed properly and stored in a dry and cool place i.e. a cupboard.
- Saves on water – Standard oat milk is already much better in terms of water use than its dairy equivalent, with around 580 litres being saved per litre you drink. But even in liquid oat milk, 90% of the water in the final product is unnecessary. Oat milk powder significantly reduces the use of water even further.
- Healthy – Oats are a fantastic, healthy food source. They’re full of vitamins and minerals, dietary fibre and antioxidants. Overherd also fortify their powder with vitamin B12 and calcium for extra health benefits.
- Few ingredients – Overherd’s powdered oat milk contains organic oats (no surprise), coconut powder, chicory root fibre and calcium. There are zero preservatives with Overherd’s oat milk powder. There are also no flavourings, sweeteners, gums, added sugar, salt or palm oil.
- UK made – The oat milk powder itself is manufactured at a UK facility.
Overherd Oat Milk Features
We’ve taken a look at the main benefits of oat milk powder, but let’s just focus in a little more on Overherd’s oat milk and unique features.
Ingredients
Overherd Oat Milk is created using 68% organic oats. These are grown in Europe (like most oats for oat milk are) and sent across to the UK. The oat milk powder itself is made in the UK.
There are four other ingredients in the powder:
- Coconut MCT powder – Provides the creaminess and healthy fats
- Chicory root fibre – Creates a smooth texture and for added prebiotic fibre
- Calcium – Offers nutritional benefits such as healthy bones and teeth
- Vitamin B12 – Helps to maintain healthy blood, nerve cells and DNA
Taste and flavour

At the time of writing, I’ve been trying out Overherd’s oat milk powder for the past week or so.
So far, I’ve tried Overherd oat milk powder straight in my coffee as a vegan creamer, I’ve mixed it with water (then added it to coffee) and I’ve put a scoop into my post-gym protein shake.
I didn’t think dumping 20g of powder into my hot coffee would work, but it does.
In all instances, the oat milk tastes great. I must say, I’ve been impressed. It’s creamy, naturally sweet and really smooth. Spot on to be honest.
Next up for me is to try it with my overnight oats – I can’t get enough of the stuff!
How to prepare

One of the major benefits of Overherd oat milk is how easy and straightforward it is to make.
As mentioned, I’ve been using my oat milk powder straight from the bag, using it in coffee and adding it to smoothies. Each pouch comes with a 20g scoop, which is made from 85% recycled bamboo fibre. Pretty good. As they’re designed to be reused and reused, Overherd only send out a scoop with first orders – so don’t throw it away!
If you want to make a large quantity of liquid oat milk, all you need is water and a shaker. I received one of the glass Overherd bottles and it’s been really good.
Overherd recommend using 20g of oat milk powder per 200ml of water. Close the container and give it a good shake for 15 seconds. I probably shook mine for 30 seconds just to make sure all the powder was dissolved. This froths the milk up, but it quickly settles down. I had no issues at all with how the powder mixed with water.
Just how much powder you use comes down to personal preference. The more powder you use, the creamier the texture.
Packaging

The Overherd oat milk comes in a recyclable pouch. This has been digitally printed on using carbon neutral methods.
The downside is that this pouch is made from plastic. The upside is that it’s made from one type of plastic, with the plastic resin code LDPE 4. Technically, this should make it easier to recycle than multi-material packaging, such as cartons and coffee cups.
LDPE is lightweight and offers full protection for the contents inside. At the same time, it’s made from fossil fuels.
This area is tricky for companies to get perfectly right as there’s a trade-off between keeping the product in good condition with moisture and air out, versus going for a more sustainable material. For example, most paper or compostable packaging will only have a limited shelf life and may not keep all moisture out, which would then result in more food waste.
Overherd are more than aware of this. They actively state on the website that if anyone has a better solution, they’re more than welcome to get in touch.
Nutritional content

The nutritional content of Overherd oat milk is generally pretty good too.
Each 100ml serving provides just 44 calories, 1.7g of fat, 6g of carbs and 1.4g of sugar.
All of these stats are better than liquid oat milk competitors, such as Alpro and Oatly, who are also owned and partly-owned by some unethical companies. Oatly also tried to sue a small family run oat milk business in Cambridgeshire for trademark infringement. The judge ruled in the family’s favour.
As a health conscious person, the only downside for me from a nutritional perspective is that oat milk generally has a low protein content compared to dairy milk. But you can’t have it all, can you?
Perfect ways to use oat milk powder

Overherd oat milk powder gives you versatility and convenience. It really is a handy companion in various different scenarios.
- When travelling or camping: No fridge? No problem. The convenience of oat milk powder makes it perfect for individuals who are travelling or camping. Its lightweight, compact and so easy to use. Plus, its longer shelf life means it won’t expire as quickly as traditional milk products and you’ll never get any milk spillages!
- In hot drinks: Used diluted with water or add the powder directly to your hot drink and stir. It provides that delicious oaty flavour and creamy texture without the need for dairy.
- Smoothies and protein shakes: For those seeking a plant-based alternative, Overherd oat milk powder can be added to smoothies and protein shakes.
- In baking and cooking: Oat milk powder can be incorporated into numerous recipes, such as pancakes, muffins, cookies, over cereal, and even in savoury dishes. Its ability to dissolve and blend into sauces makes it a valuable addition to any kitchen.
- For those with unpredictable milk consumption: One of the greatest advantages of oat milk powder is that you only need to mix as much as you require. If you don’t use fresh plant-based milk regularly and find yourself wasting half-used cartons, oat milk powder is the ideal solution.
